MitOst Remote: First Online Staff Meeting

Yesterday, MitOst staff had their first staff meeting that was hosted online completely. It was a very rewarding experience.

In response to the corona outbreak and various measures around it, MitOst has a travel and event ban in place until 31 May. Also, office staff has been advised to work from home. While the current situation creates a high level of uncertainty for us as individuals and as organisation, it is also an opportunity – an opportunity to learn from each other and together, to connect in new and different ways and to stand in solidarity as a community. In the upcoming time, we would like to embark on a common learning journey with the MitOst community to explore how we can connect and support each other in times of uncertainty and difficulty.

Staying Home and Connected

Yesterday, MitOst staff had their first staff meeting that was hosted online completely. It was a very rewarding experience. In the check-out people shared that they feel grateful as well as a sense of belonging and community. The meeting fostered our motivation, enthusiasm and commitment. People also left the meeting with the strong wish to care for others and foster solidarity in the different communities we are part of. Some factors helped to make this meeting with around 35 people meaningful and effective.

  • We prepared the meeting thoroughly with a clear agenda and slides used for collective writing sessions and documenting group work.
  • Three moderators co-hosted the meeting to share responsibilities and tasks.
  • The time keeper did a very good job.
  • We started the meeting with agreeing on some principles as common ground of the conversation:

    • Listen to understand
    • Participation not domination
    • Focus on the goals
    • Assume best intentions
    • Be present

  • A mixture of plenary situations with everyone and break-out sessions in smaller groups created a good rhythm to keep the energy level up.
  • Since we were working with a collective writing sessions, we have an artefact of the meeting that everyone contributed to.

We would like to thank Francesca and Alicia from ouishare for sharing their knowledge on hosting online community events and co-creating the staff meeting with us.
