European Forum – Active Citizenship

All over Europe, actors of all sectors of society constantly have to deal with new and complex challenges. In the fields of social entrepreneurship, administration, and civic society many of them are developing innovative tools and strategies, new forms of participation and organisation which help fostering a solidary and active civil society. However, an international exchange of this practical know-how does not often take place.

The European Forum – Active Citizenship is a new annual format of MitOst and Federal Agency for Civic Education which invites representatives of NGOs and think tanks, social entrepreneurs, trainers and facilitators, clerks from public administration and politicians from the EU and its neighbouring countries (also from Russia, Tunisia, Egypt, and Eastern Partnership Countries) to exchange and reflect their learnings in a specific field of work. In 2015, the first edition of the Forum was dedicated to “Participatory Urban Development”. This year, the 40 selected participants will focus on “Diversity and Inclusion.”

  • A first network meeting takes place during the annual International MitOst Festival, where participants team up and are encouraged to share their methods and approaches in a workshop as a contribution to the event’s programme.
  • Work shadowing visits allow for a personal encounter with the partner’s working context and the local socio-economic and cultural realities he or she lives in.

  • In a final meeting, participants reflect the experiences gained in the project and plan further joint activities. After the Forum, MitOst supports and encourages the participants and the different international partner constellations to develop and realise their follow-up ideas.
